Les grew up near Penrith, NSW, where his mum and dad lived after WWII. They’d first met at Roper as kids and were later married on Emerald River Mission on Groote Eylandt where his dad had a reputation for being a strong swimmer. Decades later, during the construction of Sydney’s Warragamba Dam, his dad’s deep diving skills would be called on again but it was his passion for art and a piece of poly pipe that Les remembers most.
