As an Aboriginal Health Worker, Bernie Shields spent her whole career empowering her people - and they, in turn, empowered her. Bernie worked at the old East Arm Leprosarium, a place that carried her through one of the most difficult times in her life. Bernie survived being shot, and used this experience to educate remote communities across the Top End.
